According to the NSW Police Commissioner, there’s no evidence linking last night’s “terrifying” shooting incident in Sydney’s Croydon Park to terrorism or gang-related activity.
The 60-year-old man arrested during a large police response in the city’s inner west was reportedly firing a high-powered rifle at random, police said on Monday morning.
The area around Croydon Park went into lockdown, with officers urging residents to stay indoors after reports of gunfire near Georges River Road and Brighton Avenue just before 8 pm on Sunday.
Several vehicles including two police cars were hit by gunfire, Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said in an interview with 2GB this morning.
Assistant Commissioner Trent King told Today that the gunman was shooting randomly, and it’s believed he was firing from a rooftop.
A man in his 50s, understood to be a taxi driver, presented to Canterbury Hospital with a gunshot wound before being transferred to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, NSW Ambulance said.
Lanyon said the man was in a serious but stable condition after surgery, having been shot in his neck and chest.
When police arrived on the scene, the alleged gunman fired on them as well, King said.
Lanyon later told 2GB that body-worn camera footage showed bullets hitting close by, with officers forced to take cover as they tried to help members of the public.
One of those officers had only been out of the academy for five weeks, and Lanyon praised her actions during the incident.
He estimated that between 50 and 100 shots were fired.
Three people a man and a woman in their 30s and a woman in her 50s went to Campsie Police Station with minor injuries. Paramedics treated them there before they were taken to Canterbury Hospital.
At the scene, paramedics also treated 16 people for minor injuries. Two men were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
NSW Ambulance earlier reported that a man in his 40s suffered facial injuries while taking cover behind glass.
No police officers have been reported injured.
Around 9:30 pm tactical police entered a unit above a shop on Georges River Road and arrested a 60-year-old man.
Two rifles were also seized.
The man was taken to hospital under police guard for injuries sustained during the arrest.
He remains in hospital.
“We’re investigating how the man obtained both the firearm and the ammunition,” King said. He added that the rifle used was of a very high calibre.
King described the situation as “horrific” and said it could have been much worse, praising the officers for their quick and effective response.
King said no motive was yet known for the alleged shooting, but that police would speak to the arrested man at a suitable time.
A taxi driver who came under fire spoke to Today, saying he’d been driving when he heard a “bang, bang, bang”.
“And then I looked next to me and I saw a couple of holes through the window. How he missed me, I don’t know, I’m just shocked,” he said.
“It feels like it’s a movie, you know what I mean? Like, I was just going home to watch the grand final, you know?”
Police established a crime scene and roads remained closed through the night.
Tow trucks remained at the scene early this morning, with multiple vehicles still needing to be moved.
