Authorities in Sydney are continuing to release new details about the mass shooting that occurred at Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration. The attack, which took place at a community event on the sand near Archer Park, has been officially treated as a terrorist incident by police.
Police say at least 15 people have died as a result of the violence, and dozens more were badly injured. Some of the wounded include emergency personnel who were among the first responders at the scene.
Among the 15 people killed in the attack was a 10-year-old girl who passed away at Sydney Children’s Hospital, and at least 40 others sustained injuries.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots fired while the crowd was gathered for the holiday event. As the situation unfolded, people ran for cover or were helped to safety by others nearby. Officers discovered and removed suspected explosive devices near the location of the shooting.
Two suspects are now in police custody, and one was killed by officers at the scene. Authorities have urged members of the public to stay away from the beach area while the investigation continues and the site is treated as an active crime scene.
Leaders at both the state and national level have condemned the attack. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as “shocking and distressing” and said emergency services are working to support those affected. He also spoke about the need for ongoing law‑enforcement efforts to prevent similar attacks in the future.
The shooting is believed to have been carried out by a father and son. Police shot and killed the 50-year-old father at the scene, while the son was arrested and taken to hospital in serious condition.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the younger suspect is “likely” to survive and will face charges for the attack.
Authorities reported that 14 people died at the scene, and 42 others including four children were rushed to hospitals across Sydney. Two of those injured later died in hospital.
Local councils and community groups have expressed sorrow and support for victims and their families. Residents and visitors are being reminded to follow police instructions and avoid the area as investigations continue.
This incident has deeply impacted the Sydney community, especially those who had been celebrating the Jewish festival when the shooting began. Police are encouraging anyone with information or footage from the event to come forward to assist with inquiries.
